Here I demo and review the Onde Magnetique OM1, a cassette-tape-powered sampler and/or synthesizer.

Inspired by the Ondes Martenot and tape instruments like the Mellotron, this unique device allows a cassette-based drone to be pitched up and down by altering the speed of a modified cassette Dictaphone.

The full pack includes a pitch strip and a selection of pre-recorded tapes so you can start playing straight away. Here is play a few demos, including breakbeat, hardcore and ambient (Bladerunner style music) while also getting to grips with the controls.

I also attempt to use the Korg SQ1 with the device and get used to its quirks and charms.

Finally as a little bonus I run through some techniques to make similar sounds in software, including Psychic Modulation Phonec 2 and Echomelt, Audiothinng Reels, Wavesfactory Cassette and XLN Audio Retro Color RC-20
